Thanks to a generous grant from the GFFE, this project took place within the Guilford Public School System. Over the course of 10-weeks, second graders took part in classes integrating dance and movement into the second grade math curriculum. Geometry came to life in movement classes that explored the basic elements of dance while teaching the concepts of:
shape angle symmetry parallel perpendicular
fractional area perimeter diameter circumference
This active, experiential approach increased the academic and cognitive development of the students through an innovative, creative and non-traditional approach. At the conclusion of the 10-week program, the students presented self-choreographed dance pieces based upon self-created geometrical artwork.
